Foreign Tourists Are Increasingly Choosing Republika Srpska for Tradition and Authenticity

Tourism in Republika Srpska is growing, while an increasing number of foreign visitors are looking for authentic experiences, traditional food, rural households and natural attractions. Alongside the development of the tourism offer, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are playing an increasingly important role.

Tourism has long been about more than simply travelling and taking a break. It is also a way for a country, city or region to showcase what it has to offer – its nature, culture, gastronomy, traditions, customs and way of life.

Authenticity is increasingly becoming one of the key reasons why foreign tourists choose lesser-known destinations. Tourism in Republika Srpska has recorded growth in visitor numbers and overnight stays in recent years, while tourism organisations are increasingly focusing on promotion in new and distant markets.

Tourism in Republika Srpska continues to grow

This year's World Tourism Day, celebrated on 27 September, is marked by digitalisation and artificial intelligence – technologies that are increasingly changing the way tourists discover destinations, plan trips and choose the attractions they want to visit.

One example of the digitalisation of the tourism offer comes from Prijedor, where tourism attractions and information have been digitised and presented to visitors in several languages. This makes information about the destination more accessible to both domestic and foreign guests, regardless of where they come from.

Sanela Šimun from the Tourism Organisation of Republika Srpska said that the positive trend in tourism continues.

“The trend of tourism growth is continuing. Around 300,000 tourists visited Republika Srpska in the first seven months of this year, which is more than last year. For foreign visitors, we are still a new and unexplored market,” Šimun said during the morning programme of RTRS.

The increase in tourist numbers shows that Republika Srpska is increasingly becoming part of tourist routes that connect different destinations across the Balkans.

Foreign tourists are increasingly looking for authentic experiences

The largest number of visitors still comes from neighbouring countries, but the tourism offer of Republika Srpska is also attracting an increasing number of visitors from Western Europe and more distant parts of the world.

According to Šimun, many visitors come from Spain and France as part of larger Balkan tours.

“There are also many Spaniards and French visitors. These are large Balkan tours that continue towards Šipovo, Jajce, Mostar and then Trebinje,” Šimun said.

Such tourist routes allow visitors to explore several destinations during a single trip, while experiencing different cultures, cuisines and traditions of the Balkans.

It is particularly interesting that Republika Srpska is beginning to attract tourists from distant countries, including Japan and Yemen.

Tradition and local food attract visitors

For some foreign tourists, the very things that differ from the offers of major tourist centres are the greatest attraction. Instead of a conventional holiday, there is growing demand for experiences that allow visitors to connect directly with local people, traditions and ways of life.

“Such tourists choose authenticity, and that is exactly what we offer. They enjoy their stay here, they like rural households and they want to take part in preparing our traditional food,” Šimun said.

Rural tourism in Republika Srpska therefore has significant potential. Rural households, local food, traditional recipes and customs can become an important part of the tourism offer, particularly for visitors looking for experiences they cannot find in large hotel complexes.

For foreign visitors, preparing traditional food can be much more than simply having a meal – it is an opportunity to learn about local culture and everyday life.

Nature, events and local attractions are additional assets

In addition to gastronomy and rural households, Republika Srpska offers a wide range of natural and cultural attractions.

Mountains, rivers, lakes, national parks, protected areas and numerous excursion sites provide a foundation for developing different forms of tourism. Active holidays, hiking, rafting, cycling, fishing and nature-based tourism all have considerable potential.

Numerous events held throughout Republika Srpska are also an important part of the tourism offer.

“There are also many events in Republika Srpska, which is another attraction for visitors,” Šimun said.

Event tourism can be particularly important for smaller communities because it gives visitors an additional reason to visit a specific destination at a specific time. Combined with traditional gastronomy, music, customs and local products, such events can offer tourists an authentic experience of the destination.

Artificial intelligence is changing tourism

Digitalisation has become an important part of the tourism sector in recent years. Tourists today most often search for information about destinations online, using social media, maps, tourism platforms and various digital tools.

In this environment, artificial intelligence in tourism can play an increasingly important role – from presenting tourism attractions and translating information into different languages to providing personalised recommendations and making travel planning easier.

Šimun believes that new technologies can help destinations become more visible and competitive.

“It will help us become more visible, attractive and competitive. It can also help smaller destinations that are not as well known, and every form of promotion is very important,” she said.

For smaller tourism destinations, digital tools can be particularly valuable. A destination that is not widely known can use high-quality digital content to reach potential visitors from different parts of the world.

Republika Srpska is targeting new tourism markets

Further tourism development means not only increasing the number of visitors, but also expanding the markets from which they come.

While visitors from neighbouring countries continue to account for a significant share of tourism traffic, growing interest from tourists from France, Spain and other European countries, as well as visitors from more distant countries, creates opportunities for additional international promotion of Republika Srpska.

The combination of nature, tradition, local food, rural tourism, cultural attractions and authentic experiences could be one of the ways Republika Srpska positions itself among destinations offering travellers a different experience of the Balkans.

As travellers’ habits change, so does the way destinations are promoted. Today's tourist is not only looking for a place to stay overnight. Increasingly, they are looking for a story, an experience and contact with local culture.

This is precisely where Republika Srpska sees an opportunity – to attract even more domestic and foreign visitors through an authentic tourism offer, traditional gastronomy, natural attractions, events and modern digital tools.
