These Are the Jobs of the Future Through 2035: Highest Demand Expected in IT and Healthcare

The labour market is changing faster than many employees may realize, and the latest projections indicate that demand could particularly increase over the next decade for professionals in technology, healthcare, finance and management.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has published employment projections through 2035, while Business Insider combined them with salary data to identify 20 occupations that offer both strong earnings and significant potential for employment growth. The analysis included jobs with a median annual salary of at least $75,000.

The data applies to the U.S. labour market, but the trends are also interesting more broadly, particularly when it comes to identifying which skills are likely to be in demand in the years ahead.

Technology remains one of the biggest sources of new jobs

It is no surprise that occupations related to data, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity are among those expected to see strong growth.

The number of people employed as data scientists in the U.S. is projected to increase by around 35% between 2025 and 2035, while employment of information security analysts is expected to grow by about 21%.

Demand is being driven by the growing amount of data companies collect and process, as well as the need to develop AI systems and protect businesses from cyberattacks.

Among the occupations with strong potential are also computer and information research scientists, who work on developing new technologies and AI solutions. The BLS projects employment growth of 22% for this profession, with a median annual salary of $140,300.

Healthcare will need more workers

One of the clearest trends concerns the healthcare sector.

The BLS expects employment of nurse practitioners to increase by 41% by 2035. Their median annual salary is around $132,300.

Growth is also expected among physician assistants and healthcare managers. Employment in healthcare management positions is projected to increase by 24%, with a median annual salary of $123,860.

Among the reasons are an ageing population and growing demand for healthcare and social services. Healthcare and social assistance are expected to be among the sectors with the strongest employment growth over the next decade.

It is not just about IT and medicine

The list also includes occupations in finance and business.

Accountants and auditors, for example, are expected to see a significant number of new jobs, while growth is also projected for financial specialists, managers and analysts.

It is particularly interesting that occupations combining analytical thinking with business decision-making are among those offering strong earning potential. This suggests that the future labour market will not belong exclusively to technical professionals, but also to people who can turn data into concrete business decisions.

Energy is becoming increasingly important

Changes in the energy sector are also creating new employment opportunities.

Wind turbine service technicians and solar photovoltaic installers are among the occupations with the fastest projected percentage growth. However, it is important to distinguish between percentage growth and the total number of new jobs.

The BLS projects employment growth of 37% for solar photovoltaic installers and 30% for wind turbine service technicians. However, because these occupations have a relatively small employment base, the total number of new jobs will be considerably lower than in sectors such as healthcare or technology.

What does this mean for people choosing a career?

One of the key messages from these projections is that a well-paid job and a job of the future are not necessarily two different things.

The data points to growing demand for people who work with technology and data, but also for professionals who solve complex problems, manage systems and work in areas where human expertise is difficult to replace.

At the same time, automation and AI could reduce demand for certain routine jobs. The BLS, for example, expects automation and AI to contribute to declining employment in some administrative and office occupations.

That is why the question of career choice is no longer simply “Which job pays the most?”, but also which skills will be valuable enough for demand to continue growing.

For now, U.S. projections provide a fairly clear answer: these include data, AI, cybersecurity, healthcare, finance and management, as well as occupations connected to the transition towards renewable energy sources, Blic reports.
