Germany’s KfW has been named the world’s safest bank for 2026 for the 17th consecutive year, while European financial institutions once again dominate the global rankings.

The American magazine Global Finance has published its 35th annual list of the World’s 100 Safest Banks, showing that European banks continue to lead in terms of financial stability and creditworthiness.

European banks occupy all of the top 12 positions, account for 17 places among the top 25, and represent more than half of the top 50 safest banks.

Germany’s development bank KfW once again takes first place, a title it has held for 17 consecutive years, CdM reports.

Which Are the Safest Banks in the World?

Behind Germany’s KfW, Switzerland’s Zürcher Kantonalbank ranks second, while the Netherlands’ BNG Bank takes third place.

Fourth place goes to Germany’s Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank, followed by L-Bank, also from Germany, in fifth place.

The remaining institutions in the top ten are Nederlandse Waterschapsbank from the Netherlands, Kommunalbanken from Norway, Basler Kantonalbank from Switzerland, NRW.BANK from Germany, and Swedish Export Credit from Sweden.

Notably, none of the top ten banks is from the United States, China, or Japan.

The highest-ranked Canadian bank is Royal Bank of Canada, in 13th place, while Australia’s Commonwealth Bank of Australia ranks 14th.

Singapore’s DBS Bank takes 16th place, followed immediately by Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation and United Overseas Bank, also from Singapore.

Which Countries Have the Most Banks on the List?

This year’s ranking includes banks from a total of 28 countries, territories, and districts.

France has the largest number of representatives, with ten banks.

Germany, South Korea, and the United States follow with eight banks each, while Canada has seven banks among the world’s 100 safest.

Switzerland, Sweden, and China also have a significant number of representatives, confirming the broad geographical diversity of institutions that meet the magazine’s criteria.

Where Do the World’s Largest Banks Rank?

Although American banks are among the world’s largest financial institutions, they do not occupy the top positions in the safety ranking.

JPMorgan Chase ranks 66th, Bank of America is in 76th place, while Bank of New York Mellon and State Street perform better, ranking 55th and 57th, respectively.

Among Chinese banks, China Development Bank ranks 77th, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China 98th, Agricultural Bank of China 99th, and China Construction Bank 100th.

Among well-known European banks, UBS ranks 24th, BNP Paribas 49th, Crédit Agricole 50th, Banco Santander 67th, and Deutsche Bank 80th.

Austria’s Erste Group Bank ranks 85th.

How Is a Bank’s Safety Determined?

The ranking is based on an assessment of long-term foreign-currency issuer credit ratings assigned by three international credit rating agencies: Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s, and Fitch.

Data from the world’s 500 largest banks is analysed, and the results are used to compile the list of the 100 safest banks.

This means the ranking does not show which banks have the largest assets, the most customers, or the highest profits. Instead, it identifies the institutions that stand out for their creditworthiness according to the methodology applied.

Joseph Giarraputo, founder and editorial director of Global Finance, emphasised that stability and risk management are particularly important in times of global uncertainty.

“During a period of ongoing economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and rapid changes in the financial sector, strength, stability, and disciplined risk management remain key benchmarks of banking excellence,” Giarraputo said.

He added that this year’s selection recognises institutions that have demonstrated the financial strength and long-term resilience needed to navigate emerging risks.
