New kayaking course on the Vrbas: Better conditions for athletes, new content for Banja Luka

06.10.2026 Vijesti

A new kayaking course has been opened on the Vrbas River in the central part of Banja Luka, giving the city a new sports and recreational facility and creating additional opportunities for the development of kayaking and water sports.

The new kayaking course on the Vrbas is expected to provide better training conditions for local kayakers, particularly young athletes and beginners, while also creating opportunities for recreational activities.

According to the Banja Luka City Administration, the course was built in accordance with the standards of the International Canoe Federation, while the first phase of the project includes rapids and accompanying facilities. The construction of spectator stands is also planned in the next phase, which could allow the site to host sporting events and competitions.

Better conditions for kayakers

Banja Luka Mayor Draško Stanivuković said that the Vrbas already offers excellent natural conditions for kayaking, particularly in the river canyon, but that the city lacked a central location suitable for training and working with beginners.

The new course is therefore an important step in improving sports infrastructure in Banja Luka, making kayaking more accessible to a wider number of citizens.

In addition to professional athletes and clubs, the course could support the development of kayaking schools, youth programmes and various recreational activities on the Vrbas.

The Vrbas as a space for sport and recreation

The City Administration has also announced further development of the area along the Vrbas, with the aim of creating additional facilities for residents and visitors.

Planned projects include the completion of part of the Banja Luka riverfront, construction of a skate park and the connection of walking paths below the City Bridge.

These projects are expected to further establish the Vrbas riverbanks as an important area for sport, recreation, walking and outdoor activities.

Kayaker Milica Stanković stressed that the new course is not intended exclusively for professional competitors, but also for recreational users, which could help make kayaking more popular among Banja Luka residents.

A new attraction for Banja Luka

The opening of the kayaking course is another step towards integrating the Vrbas more strongly into Banja Luka's sporting and tourism offer.

The river, one of the city's most recognizable symbols, is already well known for kayaking, rafting and other water sports. New infrastructure could further strengthen this potential.

The course's central location is particularly important, as it makes the facility more accessible to residents. Together with the planned development of the Vrbas riverbanks, the new kayaking course could become part of a wider area dedicated to sport, recreation and outdoor activities.

For Banja Luka, this represents not only an investment in sports infrastructure, but also an opportunity to further position the Vrbas as a destination for athletes, recreational users and nature lovers.

The new kayaking course could therefore serve several purposes in the future – from daily training and youth programmes to recreational activities, competitions and other events on the water.
