Jobs Many People Avoid: Good Pay, Fewer and Fewer Workers

Good pay is not always enough to attract workers. Some occupations offer above-average salaries and additional benefits, yet employers still struggle to find people willing to do them.

The reasons are not purely financial. Night shifts, weekend work, physical demands, being away from home for extended periods, and a high level of responsibility can all be decisive when workers choose between two jobs.

As a result, occupations facing labour shortages also include jobs that can provide a very respectable income.

Why Isn't a Good Salary Enough?

When talking about jobs that are short of workers, it is often assumed that low pay is the main problem. However, income is only one part of the equation.

Some people do not want to work nights or weekends, others are unwilling to spend several months away from home, while some will turn down a job because of the physical demands or the high level of responsibility involved.

Because of such working conditions, some employers offer higher salaries, bonuses, paid accommodation and other benefits in an effort to attract workers, writes Bizportal.

Which Workers Are Employers Struggling to Find?

The problem is particularly pronounced in certain skilled trades and technical occupations, as well as in transport, construction, industry, hospitality and care work.

Electricians, welders, plumbers, CNC operators, mechanics, technicians and other skilled workers can earn good money once they gain experience, especially in labour markets where there is a shortage of such workers.

For many of these jobs, a university degree is not necessary. Practical knowledge, experience and the appropriate licence or certification can be more important than formal education.

What Puts Workers Off the Most?

Working hours are one of the main issues. Night shifts, weekends and frequently changing schedules can make a job less attractive even when the pay is higher.

There is also the physical strain. Construction and industrial workers, drivers and many tradespeople often work under demanding conditions, which is why some people would rather accept a lower-paid but physically easier job.

For some occupations, responsibility is the decisive factor. Working with expensive equipment, heavy machinery, hazardous materials or people requires additional training and involves greater pressure.

How Does a Labour Shortage Drive Up the Price of Labour?

When there are not enough workers, employers have a limited number of options: increase salaries, offer additional benefits, finance training or look for employees in other cities and countries.

As a result, a job that was once considered unattractive can become significantly better paid precisely because fewer and fewer people are willing to do it.

Still, a high salary alone does not mean that a particular job is the right choice for everyone. Before accepting an offer, it is important to consider working hours, days off, physical demands, opportunities for advancement, possible work away from home, and the need for additional education or licensing.

This is where part of today's labour market paradox lies: the more demanding a job is, and the fewer people who want to do it, the more an employer may have to offer simply to find a worker.
