Mrkonjić Grad is a municipality that brings together natural beauty, rich tradition, and strong economic dynamism. Surrounded by the mountains Lisina, Manjača and Čemernica, as well as the rivers Vrbas and Sana, the region is characterized by exceptional resources for the development of tourism, agriculture, the wood industry and the energy sector.
The Tourist Organization of the Municipality of Mrkonjić Grad has officially begun its work, opening a new chapter in the tourism development of this western region of the Republic of Srpska. The goal of the new institution is to strengthen the tourism identity of Mrkonjić Grad, increase the number of visitors, support local economic development, and enhance tourism-related spending through the promotion of the region’s abundant natural, cultural and historical resources.
Mrkonjić Grad is known for its clean air, lakes and dense forests, making it one of the most attractive destinations for nature lovers and active travelers. The Balkana Lake, Pecka, Zelenkovac, Bočac, as well as numerous springs, hiking trails and cultural-historical monuments — all contribute to the region’s exceptional value and testify to its rich past.
Economically, the municipality has a strong foundation in the wood and metal industries, agriculture, and the energy sector, while in recent years investments in tourism, hospitality and rural households have been steadily increasing. Its strategic geographical position — between Banja Luka, Jajce and Šipovo — makes Mrkonjić Grad a natural hub of tourism flows in western Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Thanks to its rich natural resources, diverse offerings and growing interest from investors and visitors, Mrkonjić Grad is becoming a center of sustainable development and an example of how local communities can shape a recognizable identity through tourism and economic growth.
Tourist Organization of Mrkonjić Grad – a new address for destination development
Nataša Arežina, the Acting Director of the Tourist Organization of Mrkonjić Grad, emphasized that the municipality possesses significant tourism potential.
“We want tourism to become an important driver of local development,” Arežina stated.
The Tourist Organization plans intensive promotional campaigns, the creation of digital guides, tourist maps and multimedia content, as well as cooperation with the Tourism Organization of the Republic of Srpska and regional partners.
Balkana – the gem of Mrkonjić Grad’s tourism offer
Balkana Lake, located just four kilometers from the center of Mrkonjić Grad, is one of the most recognizable excursion sites in the Republic of Srpska. Nestled at the foot of Mount Lisina, the emerald-green lake surrounded by lush forest offers ideal conditions for relaxation, recreation and outdoor sports.
The crystal-clear water is suitable for swimming and fishing, while the surrounding hiking trails — marked by the Mountaineering-Ecological Society Vidik — connect the lake to nearby peaks and offer numerous lookout points. Nearby are Hotel Balkana and the Brdo weekend settlement, forming the core of the local tourism infrastructure.
Pecka – one of the most beautiful villages in BiH and a center of outdoor tourism
The village of Pecka, located 30 kilometers from Mrkonjić Grad, has become a true brand in rural and adventure tourism. It is home to the “Vrela Sane” Natural Monument, the largest natural climbing area in Bosnia and Herzegovina with over 140 climbing routes, as well as numerous events that attract visitors from across the region.
Pecka hosts several signature events each year — the Pecka Outdoor Festival, the Pecka Rock Climbing Festival and the Mushroom School. In 2023, the village was officially declared one of the 14 most beautiful villages in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The “Pecka” Visitor Center, run by the Greenways organization, offers accommodation and guiding services for guests.
“Pecka is proof that the combination of nature, tradition and a modern approach can create an authentic tourism product that attracts thousands of visitors,” Arežina noted.
Zelenkovac – an oasis of art, ecology and good energy
Located in the village of Podrašnica, just 15 kilometers from Mrkonjić Grad, Zelenkovac is a cult destination for lovers of art and nature. This ecological area, with its rustic bungalows, gallery and a café housed in an old watermill, offers a unique experience in the heart of a pine forest.
Zelenkovac is best known for its Jazz Festival, held for more than 25 years and gathering artists from across Europe. Throughout the year, it also hosts art colonies, eco-workshops and musical events. Zelenkovac stands as an example of sustainable tourism, showing how a love for nature can evolve into a long-term project that generates both cultural and economic benefits for the entire region.
The “Rogolji” nursery and Bočac Lake – new tourism highlights
Among the new destinations the Tourist Organization aims to further develop are the “Rogolji” Nursery and Bočac Lake.
The nursery, located at the foot of Mount Lisina, is already recognized as an excursion site and host of events such as “Ratak Grava” and “Mushroom Days,” which attract nature lovers, culinary enthusiasts and hikers.
Bočac Lake, created by the construction of a dam on the Vrbas River, is ideal for water sports, fishing and recreational activities. Situated between the Čemernica and Manjača mountains, the lake forms a natural amphitheater for the development of sports and adventure tourism. Adding to its value is the Old Town of Bočac, a medieval fortress that testifies to the region’s rich history.
Dabrac viewpoint – a breathtaking view
In the village of Dabrac, along the main Banja Luka – Mrkonjić Grad road, a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Bočac Lake and the Vrbas Canyon is planned for construction.
The project already has completed technical documentation and a construction permit, with applications for domestic and international funding to follow.
“The viewpoint will become a new attraction and a symbol of Mrkonjić Grad — a place that will bring together tourists, photographers and nature lovers,” Arežina emphasized.
Tourism as a development opportunity for Mrkonjić Grad
With the establishment of the Tourist Organization, Mrkonjić Grad is laying the foundation for sustainable tourism development and strengthening the local economy through job creation, the promotion of local products, and the growth of entrepreneurship in hospitality, accommodation and rural tourism.
With natural jewels such as Balkana, Pecka, Zelenkovac and Bočac, Mrkonjić Grad has all the prerequisites to become the leading tourism hub of western Republic of Srpska — and an essential stop on the map for both domestic and international visitors.
