By the decision of the Government of the Republika Srpska to declare the municipality of Han Pijesak an air spa, conditions have been created for the development of health tourism.
The plan includes organized provision of healthcare services and disease prevention. Adequate facilities exist; however, significant investments in tourist infrastructure are needed.
The first air quality measurements in this area were conducted in the early 20th century, establishing Han Pijesak as a natural air spa with the highest ozone concentration in Europe. This data was recently confirmed by an analysis of climatic characteristics alongside a Report on Air Quality Measurement and Assessment in the environment. The government’s decision to officially designate Han Pijesak as an air spa has opened up possibilities for local employment.
Several suitable facilities await utilization, but substantial investments in tourist infrastructure are required.
“Our priority now is investors. We will approach the Government, and I believe there will be understanding. Private investors are also crucial. Currently, three hotels are under construction; one is near completion, and two will open in the spring. The municipality is building the Karađorđević Castle, which will also provide accommodation,” says Slobodan Đurić, the mayor of Han Pijesak.
The Republic of Srpska Tourist Organization sees an opportunity to introduce a completely new tourist product that will easily find a place in the market, given that clean air has become a priority for tourists when choosing locations.
“If the infrastructure aligns with this narrative, the potential of the place will be properly utilized, and Han Pijesak will be positioned and visited, especially since investments are planned in facilities like the Karađorđević Villa, which will undoubtedly contribute to the popularization of the area, especially among tourists from the former Yugoslavia,” says Marko Radić from the Republic of Srpska Tourist Organization.
In the coming days, the municipality assembly will select a location for the construction of the central air spa facility, and the opening of the municipal tourist organization is also planned. With the immediate proximity to the Igrišta ski resort, Han Pijesak aspires to be part of the leading tourist offerings of the Republika Srpska.
