Hazelnut cultivation expanding across Lijevče polje – domestic production becoming competitive for export

10.11.2025

In the fertile area of Lijevče polje, one of the most developed agricultural regions of Republika Srpska, interest among producers in hazelnut cultivation has been steadily increasing in recent years. According to expert estimates, hazelnut orchards currently cover around 30 hectares, and new plantations appear each year, confirming the growing economic importance of this crop.

Harvesting is underway on numerous plantations, and although this year’s yields are slightly lower than expected, producers are satisfied with the quality of the nuts and with current market prospects.

Growing interest and secure demand

Fruit-growing experts emphasize that hazelnuts are becoming an increasingly profitable crop, especially for small and family-owned farms. In addition to domestic demand, interest among foreign buyers is also growing — particularly from Italy, one of the world’s largest hazelnut processors.

“There is realistic potential for hazelnuts from Republika Srpska to be placed on international markets, as their quality meets the standards of European processors. The key step will be strengthening producer associations and establishing collection centers that can ensure consistent supply,” agronomists from the area explain.

The potential of Lijevče polje and support through incentives

The fertile soil of Lijevče polje, well-suited for fruit-growing, enables high yields and excellent nut quality when combined with proper agricultural practices and irrigation systems. The Government of Republika Srpska and the Ministry of Agriculture provide incentives for establishing perennial orchards, with hazelnuts and walnuts recognized as crops with long-term potential.

Producers point out that favorable climatic conditions, subsidies and reliable market opportunities are the main reasons why hazelnut cultivation is expanding. Some of them are also planning to start processing — from drying and packaging to producing hazelnut spreads and flour.

The economics of hazelnuts – a long-term investment

Although hazelnut trees require several years to reach full production, the investment pays off, as the purchase price ranges from 6 to 8 KM per kilogram, while processed products reach significantly higher market value.

Domestic processing and export could further increase profitability, especially through stronger cooperation between local cooperatives, growers and processors. With such development, Lijevče polje could position itself as the leading center of hazelnut production in Republika Srpska.
